Alexander Fleming

PHYSICIAN & BACTERIOLOGIST
*AUGUST 6, 1881, IN DARVEL, SCOTLAND
†MARCH 11, 1955, IN LONDON, ENGLAND

Alexander Fleming made medical history as the discoverer of penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic. His groundbreaking discovery in 1928 revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections and saved millions of lives.

Fleming accidentally discovered the growth-inhibiting effect of the Penicillium notatum fungus on bacterial cultures. His subsequent research led to the isolation of penicillin and laid the foundation for modern antibiotic therapy. In 1945, Fleming, together with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain - who facilitated the industrial production of penicillin - received the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine.

Today, antibiotics are indispensable in medicine. In rare cases, though, antibiotics can also cause allergic reactions. Allergies are generally on the rise in the general population. If you would like to be tested for a possible allergy, click here.

Fun Fact

Alexander Fleming was known to be a rather messy scientist. Ironically, we probably owe the discovery of penicillin to precisely this fact, as the discovery was only possible due to the fungus proliferating under the specific hygiene in his laboratory!
