Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis

PHYSICIAN
*JULY 1, 1818, IN BUDA, HUNGARY
†AUGUST 13, 1865, IN VIENNA

Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis is known as the “Savior of Mothers” because he literally discovered the absolutely centrality of hygiene to medicine. Through his observations treating women who were suffering and dying in childbirth, he determined that doctors and midwives washing their hands with chlorinated water prior to childbirth would drastically reduce maternal mortality following delivery. This discovery led to a significant decrease in deaths and cases of puerperal fever at the maternity hospital where he worked.

In the medical community at the time, he was widely derided for his findings and suffered severe professional and personal consequences as a result. Following his death, the medical community was forced to recognize his foresight and the validity of his findings. Today, his discovery practically defines best practices in all medicine.
