Karl Landsteiner

PHYSICIAN
*JUNE 14, 1868, IN BADEN, NEAR VIENNA
†JUNE 26, 1943, IN NEW YORK, U.S.A.

Karl Landsteiner is known for discovering the Human Blood Group System. He also determined that poliomyelitis – polio - is a viral disease. Thanks to his research, the first successful blood transfusion took place in 1907 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Did you know that roughly 120 million units of blood are donated worldwide each year? In Europe alone, approximately 25 million blood transfusions are performed annually.

Do you know your own blood type? Knowing your blood type can save the life of someone in the same category of blood type – and your own. We are always happy to perform a blood test to determine your blood type at our Doctorum.

Thanks to vaccinations, poliomyelitis is now almost eradicated. Are you vaccinated against polio, or do you need a booster shot? We are always happy to advise you on your vaccination status.

Fun Fact

Karl Landsteiner was featured on Austria’s former 1000-Schilling banknote.
