Marie Curie

SCIENTIST
*NOVEMBER 7, 1867, IN WARSAW, POLAND
†JULY 4, 1934, IN PASSY, FRANCE

Marie Curie is known for her groundbreaking research in the field of radioactivity. She was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific disciplines – in Physics in 1903, and in Chemistry in 1911. Curie discovered the elements polonium and radium and made significant contributions to the understanding of radioactivity, which had a major impact on medicine and physics. Marie Curie was a pioneer in a male-dominated scientific world and championed gender equality in science throughout her life. Her tireless dedication to research and her remarkable achievements have inspired generations of female scientists.

Did you know that during World War I, she developed portable X-ray machines to help wounded soldiers at the front? Her legacy lives on and continues to influence science and medicine today.

And did you know that radioactive materials are now used in medicine to treat cancer and other diseases? The discovery of radioactivity not only revolutionized research, but also opened up new treatment options. Have you had a mammogram this year? Click here to schedule a screening appointment.

Fun Fact

Marie Curie was so passionate about her research during her career that she didn't have the time or inclination to patent her discoveries. Her achievements are therefore freely available to the public.
