Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen made scientific history as the discoverer of X-rays, which were later named after him. His groundbreaking discovery in 1895 revolutionized medicine – particularly, diagnostics - and laid the foundation for modern imaging techniques.
Röntgen discovered the rays by chance while experimenting with a cathode ray tube. He noticed that the invisible rays could penetrate certain materials and cast a shadow onto photographic plates. His first image was of his wife's hand - a picture that profoundly changed the world of medicine.
For his extraordinary achievement, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was awarded the very first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 - a milestone in the history of science.

Did you know that Röntgen was initially skeptical about the significance of his discovery? Today, X-rays are indispensable in medicine and are used for everything from diagnosing broken bones to detecting tumors. Have you ever contemplated how much we rely on this technology in our daily lives?
Röntgen’s discovery also drew attention to radiation protection and its potential risks. Aside from X-rays, colonoscopy, for example, is another important diagnostic procedure. Click here to schedule a colonoscopy screening appointment.
Wilhelm Röntgen was so modest that he originally named the rays he discovered “X-rays” to emphasize their unknown nature. This name is still used in many countries today, while in the German, we know them as Röntgen rays. In English, though, they are still universally known as X-rays.
